Haute Mess Approved Books

Hey Babes! Not to brag, but for a girl with a serious lack of discernible talents, I scored freakishly high on my SATs in the reading comprehension section. Which is not so bad for a girl who never prepared for those tests. So, I guess you could say that reading is a strong skill of mine. I mean I hate to you know, toot my own horn, but I’m pretty much hooked on phonics over here. My love for reading started the summer of 2010, when I was going into my Sophomore year of high school. I chose to read the book, Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock and I haven’t stopped reading YA fiction books since. I know, I’m technically an adult, but that doesn’t mean I have to read boring non-fiction books or listen to jazz music.

Due in part to my Libra moon, (which is in the Anarectic degree by the way), I have the hardest time making any actual fucking decisions. So, this list that you are about to read will not be a list of my all-time favorite books that I have ever read, but a list of books that I believe you babes would like to read.

The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven

Why You Should Read This Book: Published in 2019, this book is in tune with what is fucking necessary and what is necessary is establishing the fact that girls can do what they want with their bodies and no one has the right to tell them otherwise. The protagonist and narrator, Izzy O’Neill is smart, resilient and funny as hell. It is a laugh-out-loud read with a ton of substance.

The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Why You Should Read This Book: If you watched that disgraceful 2015 film starring Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell that was also called The DUFF, don’t worry because they are two separate stories. The only thing these entities have in common is the name of the characters, that’s it and I genuinely mean it. The book aka the better version of the two is more of a high school enemies turned acquaintances with benefits situation.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Why You Should Read This Book: I am a sucker for dystopian series and the Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver is pretty incredible. Set in a universe where love is considered to be the most dangerous disease, the government orders every eighteen-year-old to undergo a procedure called, the “cure”, in which they are fixed before they are afflicted with “the feels” that could kill them or land them in a mental institute. The protagonist Lena wants a normal and safe life until she meets an Invalid named Alex. Seriously don’t you already want to know what happens?

Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally

Why You Should Read This Book: Miranda Kenneally has written some of the most re-visited stories on my overcrowded bookshelf. Catching Jordan is about a high school football quarterback named Jordan Woods who is navigating life, relationships and the reality of playing collegiate football, expect plot twist, Jordan is actually a teenage girl. Catching Jordan is the first in Kenneally’s Hundred Oaks series and while the books each feature different main characters, old characters are intertwined into each new tale.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Why You Should Read This Book: Please do not write off this book before you even read it, because of that cringe-worthy movie made in 2014. I love Zoey Deutch, but that movie was garbage. I pinky promise you the books are much better. Vampire Academy is the first of six books in this series and I tore through them my Junior year of high school. If you are a fan of shows like The Vampire Diaries or Legacies on the CW then I think you would also enjoy this steamy supernatural series.

I hope you babes head over to wherever you buy books and pick these stories out. If you like to read, let me know what books you recommend for me!

xoxo,

Kelly
