How To: Find Your Personal Style (09/16/17)

Hey Babes!

Today’s post is all about personal style.

I am a product of my environment and so is my style. My style is influenced by the people I surround myself with, the accounts I follow on Instagram and the stores I shop at. While I *almost* won best dressed in high school, I would not say that I am overtly stylish, but I do have my own personal style.

I found my personal style after YEARS of trial and error. I have worn it all! I rocked Hollister & Co. tank tops layered on top of fitted long sleeve t-shirts and I used to wear sequin body con skirts with lace tights and knit UGGs! Talk about a texture over load! I have been preppy with button down chambrays and colorful statement necklaces and I have been edgy while wearing studded combat boots and black blazers à la Kris Jenner. I wore skateboarding sneakers because that's what was the cool thing to do in 2006 and I used to tuck my baggy yoga pants into my tall UGGs.

Now? My go to uniform is a standard pair of black leggings from Old Navy and a Free People slip. I usually build my looks around those two pieces. I love love love outerwear pieces like denim jackets and faux fur vests. I have dubbed myself the queen of layering, because I layer my looks even in 90-degree weather. I prefer oversized silhouettes to tight fitting clothes and I also steer clear of bright colors and loud prints. That's what I like.

So, how'd I get there?

Pinterest!

I use Pinterest as a style search engine. My advice is to make a board or take screenshots of outfits you like. This will help you later when you hate everything you own. We all have those days. If you need some inspo, my Pinterest is linked on the right side!

Know What Works for Your Shape

Look, I have always had the worst time shopping for things that I actually like in my size. *sigh* Shit's not easy. But I have learned along the way what works on my body and what I don't like. Shirtdress: No! T-Shirt Dress: Yes!

My Tip: Highlight what makes you feel confident and cover the areas that make you feel insecure!

What Makes You Feel Good?

I layer because that's what makes me feel good. If I love a shirt, but I feel like it is too short, I throw a slip underneath of it and voilà! I feel most comfortable in tops with a longer hemline!

If you feel good while wearing all black- then be that bad bitch. If you feel good in sequins - then swan dive into Liberace's closet. The thing about personal style is that it is PERSONAL! Do you, Babes.

Who Cares What People Think?

Free People slips may be soooo 2015, but I love them, so I still wear them. I have always loved texture and faux fur, but when I was in high school I would not dare to wear anything that would make me stand out in a negative way. Now? I live in faux fur during the fall and winter. Why? Because I love it. I love the way it makes me feel like a wealthy real housewife. Isn't that the point of enjoying fashion? Wear what makes you happy...unless they are flip flops. Burn them now.

In Conclusion:

1. Make a list of what you know you already like!

2. Make a list of what you know you don't like!

3. Collect images of style inspiration. Find bloggers / models / friends whose style you can take samples from and then make it your own!

4. If you love a piece- buy it. Fuck what other people think.

5. Never wear flip flops.

xoxo,

Kelly
